Do Your Bearings Quit Early?

Bearings can be extremely susceptible to stress...especially at high loads, speeds and temperatures. Properly designed, efficient bearings can yield exemplary machinery operation for extended lives. Bearing failure can lead to insidious, slow, or sudden worsening of machinery functioning.

Failures of several types in bearings can be responsible for numerous untimely machinery breakdowns. Fatigue "spalling" results from excessive loading, where small particles of steel flake off, progressively destroying the contact surfaces within the bearing. Wear failures may occur when there is insufficient load on a bearing to keep it operating. Abrasive particles in the lubricant can produce a gradual worsening of machinery vibration characteristics by wear also. "Brinelling" wear can be caused by external vibration. It can eventually lead to fatigue failure. Mounting-induced failures can result in excessive vibration and short fatigue life.

These and other bearing failures can cost your company substantial amounts of time, effort, money, and customer good will.

Do you suspect quality defects in some of your bearings? You may be cheated of the extended life and reliability of your machinery because of poor bearing performance.

Failure of ball or roller bearings can have serious consequences such as:

  • Disruption of customer's operational plans
  • Damage which can cause a delay in shipment and
    delivery of machinery
  • Significant additional expense for repair or replacement
    of components
  • Increased labor, time, and costs to investigate, determine
    and implement corrective action
  • Exposure to claims by your customer for compensation
  • Risk to your industry reputation and repeat business

Your customers trust you to produce predictable, high quality machinery with a guaranteed life expectancy. Your repeat sales and industry reputation depend on it!

We're Here To Help!

Alouette Technology is a mechanical engineering consulting service specializing in ball and roller bearings. With over 40 years of training and experience in the turbomachinery industry, Alouette Technology can eliminate your need for short-term or specialized in-house staff. We can investigate and correct bearing related malfunctions. From bearing design and problem solving to related technologies such as lubrication, filtration and oil system debris monitoring, Alouette Technology can provide solutions to your bearing challenges whether low-tech or state- of-the-art.

ALOUETTE Logo     Design

Bearings must be carefully designed to get the best results. Often catalog sizes can be found to suit shaft and housing preferred dimension Otherwise, a special design may be necessary. Other factors can include high loads or rotational speeds and unusual or corrosive environments.
Design which takes into consideration atypical requirements at the outset will eliminate the need for expensive repairs and lost time later. The bearing and lubrication system industry-standard computer code "SHABERTH" is used for analyses. We can determine whether the life of the standard bearing meets Ball Bearing
requirements or a special design is dictated. With the code's heat transfer               BALL BEARING
Roller Bearing capabilities, the specific bearing internal geometry needed to meet life requirements and lubricant selections can be defined. Bearings strongly influence machinery rotor dynamics. We can check whether changes are needed to the system or the environment to improve the performance and reliability of your
ROLLER BEARING machinery. All our attention to proper design details is intended to help you
save time, effort, and money, as well as avoid warranty claims and enhance your reputation.

ALOUETTE Logo     Procurement

Obtaining competitive prices from bearing manufacturers is critical to your bottom line. We have procured bearings at competitive rates from most of all the major bearing vendors in North America and the European Union. We have the skills to make your special designs cost effective. Preparation of a proper engineering drawing facilitates selection of the most advantageous vendor and negotiation of both price and technical requirements. Alouette Technology has extensive experience inspecting new bearings to avoid problems and early failure. Negotiating timely delivery, dimensional inspections for discrepancies and metallurgical lab examinations, when required, help to integrate procurement into your project's schedule.

Alouette Technology keeps up to date on emerging technologies such as all-ceramic bearings, oil-less lubrication for high-speed operation, water-lubricated high-speed tilt pad journal bearings and zero-leakage face seals. These and other innovations can help to keep your profits high.

ALOUETTE Logo     Development

We can develop handling and installation procedures to ensure that no corrosion or damage occurs to the bearing after receipt and during assembly into your equipment. We can advise what instrumentation should be installed for initial testing to verify proper function of the bearing system. Alouette Technology can assist with acquiring and interpreting the data obtained. We will carry out post-test inspection of the bearings, then derive conclusions and suggest appropriate follow-up action.

ALOUETTE Logo     Service Support

As newly developed machinery enters production, inevitably there are differences between prototype and production machines. The involvement of different vendors and part manufacturing methods, size tolerances, materials or configuration changes all can cause problems with machinery. At Alouette Technology, we look for subtle indications to confirm the likelihood of bearings meeting and exceeding guaranteed or anticipated lives. We quickly pinpoint factors which will undermine successful development efforts with short-life failures. If there is an obvious necessity for a bearing change, the more quickly it is identified, the more likely corrective action can be undertaken before significant problems arise.

ALOUETTE Logo Failure Investigation
When bearing failures occur, the operation and production of complicated, expensive machinery can be placed at risk. Careful examination of bearings will usually allow pinpointing the cause of fatigue spalling, "basket case" failure, brinelling wear and other types of bearing malfunction. Related technologies such as lubrication, filtration, and oil system debris monitoring are very system aspects of bearing performance and will be carefully examined. We can save your company precious time and resources by quickly identifying the cause of bearing failure and recommending practical solutions.

HERE'S THE MAN BEHIND IT ALL!

This is Geo. Hosang's picture

George W. Hosang is the Managing Consultant and Owner, with wife Karen, of Alouette Technology, a consulting firm specializing in rolling contact bearing engineering. A graduate of the Royal Military College of Canada and the University of Toronto, he was awarded a Bachelor of Applied Science in Mechanical Engineering. While an officer in the Royal Canadian Air Force he had full time military flying duties in an all-weather jet fighter interceptor squadron.

In 1965, Mr. Hosang was awarded the prestigious Athlone Fellowship for postgraduate study at the University of Leeds, England and obtained a Master of Science degree in Tribology, the science of friction, wear, lubrication, bearings, and gearing. Leeds University is one of the major sites in the world of this emerging technology.

Mr. Hosang has been a Principal Engineer for Rolls-Royce, General Electric Aero Engines, Pratt and Whitney Aircraft, Solar Turbines Inc., and Sundstrand Corporation where he worked on long-life and all-ceramic bearings for turbine engines.

Alouette Technology was founded in 1995 and has since built a solid reputation as a consulting firm assisting numerous turbomachinery manufacturers.
